To know the position of a moving body at any particular point of time, we should know the following parameters: 1.The distance travelled by the body up to that moment of time 2. the direction in which the body is moving. The distance travelled by a body can be obtained from its speed and the time interval. The speed of the body however does not tell us anything about its direction. The quantity which gives both the distance travelled and the direction of motion is velocity.
